Module 2: Types of Disabilities

OBJECTIVE

While providing goods and services, it is highly likely that there will be interactions with people with varying disabilities. It is important to have a solid foundation of awareness and understanding of different types of disabilities in order to fully support and engage your audience. This module provides participants with a detailed breakdown of the various types and classifications of disabilities, including physical, sensory, cognitive, and mental health-related disabilities. This module will review commonly used terminology, and explain how individuals with disabilities may identify, associate, and describe their condition.

2.1 Identification, and classification of disability

  • Statistics Canada’s stats on self identification of disability, and the 10 identified types of disabilities
    • The 10 types of disabilities could be further grouped into 4 classifications (physical, sensory, cognitive, and mental health-related)

2.2 Disability Characteristics

  • Defining visible vs invisible disabilities 
  • Defining stigma of disability
  • Disability and intersectionality
  • Describing disability levels (mild, moderate, severe, very severe)
  • Discussing disability onset, length, symptom pattern
  • Adjustment to disability

2.3 Understanding Physical Disabilities
